Harrisburg – Kyle Schulze of Woodbine, Maryland 4-H captured the top individual honor on Friday, October 6 at the 2017 Stockman’s Contest at the 2017 Keystone International Livestock Exposition in Harrisburg. Bedford County Technical Center Team G took home first overall team honors. Team members included Luke Brambley, Samantha Vanpelt, Kylee Cessna, and Evan Brennan.
Youth competed in 12 classes, testing their knowledge of livestock, wool and meat judging, quality assurance and equipment identification, and management. To prepare for the contest, youth spent time in and outside of the classroom learning the cuts of meat from cattle, sheep and swine; sharpening their knowledge of equipment; and placing classes of livestock. Youth were also encouraged to keep up with current events in production agriculture.
The top five contestants with the highest individual scores were interviewed about current events in the sheep, beef and swine industry to determine the Keystone Junior Stockman of the Year.
